MAGFest 2027 First-Timer’s Guide: Badges, Hotel Lottery, Where to Stay & Getting There
Quick answer: Super MAGFest 2027 runs January 7–10, 2027 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, about 8 miles south of Washington DC. Badges sold out on September 18, 2026, and the National Harbor hotels go out by lottery. If you missed both, your best move is to join the badge waitlist and book an Alexandria, Virginia hotel on the free MAGFest shuttle route.
Last verified: October 12, 2026, against the official MAGFest hotel page and registration page. MAGFest updates these pages often, so double-check before you book.

Is it too late to go to MAGFest 2027?
Not necessarily. Badges sold out within two days of pre-registration opening, but MAGFest has said it will run an in-house badge waitlist. Watch the registration page and MAGFest’s social accounts. Badge transfers are allowed at no more than the price paid, so you can also buy a badge from a friend who can’t make it. Transferring a badge cancels any hotel reservation tied to it, though.
Avoid “badge resellers” charging over face value. MAGFest only honors transfers at or below the original price, so you’d be paying extra for something that may not work.
How the MAGFest hotel lottery works
MAGFest runs its own housing system. You don’t book the Gaylord or the other National Harbor hotels directly for the convention block. Instead, you enter your hotel and room preferences and roommates in your MAG ID account, and a lottery hands out rooms.
The 2027 timeline
- Sept 17, 2026: pre-registration and the hotel lottery opened.
- Oct 7: cutoff for the first lottery round. MAGFest expected every National Harbor room to be allocated in this round.
- Oct 11: anyone who entered the lottery and didn’t get a room could start booking the Alexandria overflow blocks.
- Oct 16: deadline to guarantee first-round rooms with a credit card.
- Oct 19: second round, using rooms that weren’t confirmed in round one. Notifications go out Oct 21.
- Later rounds: these run periodically as cancellations come in.
Rules worth knowing
- You can’t transfer a room. If you don’t need it, cancel it and it goes back into the lottery.
- Your room type is fixed once it’s allocated, and you can’t upgrade to an atrium room afterward.
- A room group feature for the Gaylord is planned for late October, after the first two rounds.
Where to stay for MAGFest
Option 1: National Harbor (walk to the con)
These hotels are a short walk from the Gaylord along Waterfront Street. During MAGFest they’re in the lottery, but if you got a room in round two or later, these are the ones you’d be choosing between:
| Hotel | Walk to Gaylord | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Gaylord National (the venue) | 0 min | Never going outside in January. The 24-hour action is all here. |
| Westin Washington National Harbor | ~2–3 min | Quieter rooms, waterfront views |
| AC Hotel National Harbor | ~2–3 min | A modern, smaller hotel |
| Residence Inn National Harbor | ~2–3 min | Kitchenettes. Saves a lot on food for groups. |
| Hampton Inn & Suites National Harbor | ~3–5 min | Free hot breakfast, lower rates |
| MGM National Harbor | Uphill. Drive or long walk | The casino crowd. Not ideal in winter. |
Even outside the block, these hotels sometimes have rooms on the open market. It’s worth checking National Harbor hotel prices for Jan 6–10 before you give up on them.
Option 2: Alexandria, VA (free shuttle)
MAGFest negotiates discounted blocks at several Alexandria hotels and runs free shuttles to the Gaylord. The full schedule and stop list is due in late October. Old Town Alexandria also has far better food, bars and walkability than National Harbor, so this is a solid choice, not just a consolation prize.
Shuttle rules to plan around:
- There’s no luggage space, so check out and store your bags first. Only a bag that fits on your lap is allowed.
- Everyone must be seated, and this is enforced.
- No eating or drinking on board.
- Children who normally need a car seat must have one, and you’ll need to store it at the Gaylord.
Option 3: Book your own room nearby
If you didn’t enter the lottery at all, look at Oxon Hill, Alexandria and the Huntington and Eisenhower Avenue area. Budget for a 10–20 minute rideshare each way, or a Metro-plus-bus trip. Compare Alexandria hotel prices here.

Getting to National Harbor
Flying in
Reagan National (DCA) is by far the closest airport, about 8 miles and 15–25 minutes by car. Dulles (IAD) and Baltimore (BWI) often have cheaper fares but are 45–60+ minutes away. Early-January flights get pricier as the holidays approach, so compare flights to DCA, IAD and BWI now.
From DCA without a car
- Rideshare or taxi: the simplest option, around 15–25 minutes.
- Metro + bus: take the Blue or Yellow Line from DCA to King St–Old Town, then a Metrobus to National Harbor. That’s roughly 50–60 minutes for a few dollars. WMATA redesigned its bus network in 2025, so check the WMATA trip planner for the current route number.
- Water taxi: the Potomac Water Taxi links Old Town Alexandria and National Harbor, but winter schedules are limited. Check before you count on it.
Driving and parking
In 2026, National Harbor’s lots charged an event rate of about $35+ per day, with no in-and-out privileges. The reserved Southpointe lot behind the Gaylord was cheaper at about $26/day, but you buy each day separately. MAGFest posts the 2027 rates around mid-October.
What a MAGFest weekend costs
| Item | Budget | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| Badge | $145 | $145–175 |
| Hotel (3 nights, split 4 ways) | $150–250 | $300–450 |
| Flight (domestic round trip) | $150–300 | $300–500 |
| Food (4 days) | $80–120 | $200+ |
| Local transport and parking | $10–60 | $60–150 |
| Total | ≈ $535–875 | ≈ $1,005–1,420+ |
These are estimates. Hotel rates depend on the block you get and how many people share the room.
First-timer tips
- It’s open around the clock. The arcade and free-play areas run 24 hours, so plan your sleep or you’ll be wiped out by Saturday.
- Use the Gaylord’s 24-hour market. The Potomac District Marketplace in the atrium was open around the clock in 2026. Restaurant lines get long at peak times.
- Bring a card, not cash. The Gaylord is cashless, and there’s a “reverse ATM” near the entrance. Marketplace vendors still take cash, and so does housekeeping (tip them!).
- Look for National Harbor’s “Show Your Badge” deals at local restaurants.
- Pack for January. The walk between hotels is short but windy along the water.
- The music is a big part of it. The concert schedule and the jam spaces are as much a draw as the games.
